As I had expected, the excitement of the audiences during the second day of the &Proud Yangon LGBT Film Festival still remained high after the big opening day (Thursday 28th).
I was so amazed with the first documentary of the day which directed by my new friend Su Su Hlaing called Love and Other Matters.
The Documentary Love and other matters show the lives of 7 LGBT people living in Myanmar. It tells personal stories of great diversity, about the most human aspects of us all: the desire to love, be loved and be accepted.
It was great. Then, we move to the highlight of the day_the screening of the Golden Globe and Oscar Nominated movie by Mr. Josh Kim, How To Win At Checkers (Every time).
Here is the Synopsis:
After the loss of both parents, 11-year-old Oat faces an uncertain future when his older brother must submit to Thailand’s annual military draft lot- tery. Unable to convince his brother to do whatever he can to change his fate, Oat takes matters into his own hands, resulting in unexpected consequences.
Before the film was screened the director made an interesting comment about Thailand as the Gay Safe Heaven. He points out that even thought there are many gay people in Thailand, the people there are not that accepting. Gay people are still being harassed and discriminated. They still need to hide their trueself from their family and friends.
This is just another reasons why we need to keep fighting for the community and the people who will come after us so, that they will be living in the world that is not contaminated by hate.
Back to our film:
I have only one word for this film:
To be honest, everyone including me had a lot of expectations for this film. Maybe because due to all the recognitions and awards that it has received but this is also the kind of pressure that might pollute the audience perceptions of the film.
Well, I was not surprise that the film was at par to my expectation.
The one thing that I love most about the film is that it is more than just an LGBT film. Its central idea was not only about a person’s sexuality but the reality of the society and the means to be successful.
During the Q&A session, I asked the director about his main message of the film. His answer was very simple: he wants to show the corruption of our world and the choices we have to make in order to survive. The film illustrates this filthy part in the sensible and relative way.
I want to say more but I do not want to spoil the movie for anyone so I encourage you to watch the film where ever you can and the DVDs will be out in the US later this year.
Now let’s move the best part of the day ! The Female (lesbian) Feb Party!!
The party was crazy!!! And our DJs: Yu KT + Asterico were amazing.
Thank you for reading this and don’t forget to like it too.
